Variable Data - A Sticky (Label) Problem...

Labelling is a vital part in the production and quality process of any goods, and never more so than for food or perishable items. When we visit the supermarket for example we find labelling on many pre-packaged goods such as meat, fish, vegetable and fruit products. Along with items such as weight, price and product name, other information sometimes needs to be added to the label, for example a "Use By", "Sell By" or "Best Before" date or perhaps an operator ID or name - "Packed by John" for example.

This type of information is often referred to as "variable data" as it can change from day to day, or operator to operator.

By linking A&D balances or scales to a suitable label printer and keyboard display unit (KDU) it is possible to cheaply and easily deploy this functionality to the production floor without the expense and complexity of a dedicated computer. Once configured the KDU actually PROMPTS the operator for information before a label can even be printed, not only making it a simple system to use, but also ensuring that all relevant information is added to the label.

As well as adding basic alpha-numeric text data KDU's can also interface with Barcode readers enabling an operator to scan for variables such as product names, batch numbers or perhaps a colour code for a particular product. All this information can be added to the final printed label as either human readable text or printed as a barcode.

Typical labelling applications might include, FS-I Washdown Checkweigher for use in food packing lines, FC-I or HC-I Counting Scale for parts counting and even laboratory balances used for tablet counting plus many other applications.
